Brand: Kingma
Instrument Categories: Classical and Flamenco, Guitars, SOLD
This is a very special Evan Kingma flamenco guitar, with the sides and back from ancient Kauri wood sourced from New Zealand, and by Ancient, we mean thirty to fifty thousand years old. This guitar is numbered as 10, and named ‘Pink Mosque 3’.
Evan Kingma is an up and coming Canadian luthier, from a small town in the Niagara Peninsula, and has completed a five year apprenticeship in Spain with Master Luthier Stephen Hill; this guitar was built during that time. In addition to building, he also helped teach at The European Institute of Guitar Making in Granada. He has now moved back to his home town. For this guitar, he offers a free setup adjustment and clean up on the guitar.
This Evan Kingma Flamenco guitar was built during 2018 at Kingma’s shop in Granada, Spain. It is built in the traditional Spanish Slipper-Foot style, with the sides slotting into the heel assembly. Construction is very clean inside and out. The top is European Spruce, with Kauri for the sides and back. Cedro or Spanish Cedar is used for the neck, body blocks, back braces and kerfed linings. The fingerboard is Ebony, and Ziricote is used for the head plate and bridge. The bridge also sports Mother of Pearl around the edges of the tie block. The finish is a high gloss French Polish and the top has a full size, clear Golpeador. Alessi tuners are installed at the head.
The nut width is 52mm and the scale length 660mm, just a shade under 26 inches. This guitar is built to deliver volume and project its voice.
About Kauri Wood
Kauri are a cornerstone of the indigenous forests of the upper North Island, New Zealand. These giants can live for more than 1000 years and grow to a diameter of two meters. Kauri are conifers. Their wood is light, strong and straight-grained, making it an ideal wood for Flamenco guitars, similar to Spanish cypress wood in density and reflective properties.
Prehistoric “Swamp Kauri” is found buried in peat-moss swamps of the Auckland region, on the North Island of New Zealand. These mammoth trees were knocked down by tsunami and storms as long as 50,000 years ago; once buried they were perfectly preserved, sealed away from oxygen. They remained hidden for millennia and were discovered and harvested in modern times. The wood has a lovely golden hue and is extremely stable making it ideal for guitar building.
This Evan Kingma Flamenco guitar is in very good condition with little playing time, and has a full voice that will develop with use.
The original hard shell case by Artur Benedykt is included.
