Brand: Epiphone
Instrument Categories: Archtop, Electric, Guitars, SOLD, Thinline
Introduced in 1962, the Epiphone Riviera followed the new Gibson Thinline design of thin archtop with a center block. The Riviera was a relatively plain model, with two small humbuckers and a Frequensator split trapeze or Vibrola tailpiece. It was built until 1970, when the Norlin management shifted Epiphone production to Japan.
The full designation for the model is Epiphone Style E360 Riviera, and in this case it is an E360TDC for Thin, Dual Pickup, Cherry finish.
Constructed using the same types of materials as the ES 335 line, the Riviera uses an arched Maple laminate body with Maple center block, Mahogany neck, and a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard carries single-parallelogram position markers, and all the inlays including the headstock logos are Mother of Pearl.
This Epiphone Riviera dates to 1969, and so is one of the last made at the historic Kalamazoo plant. It has been professionally refretted with Dunlop 6100 stainless steel wire and had a good setup, and plays quite well. Given that stainless steel wire was used, it may never require a refret again.
It is otherwise in original condition though the original case is long gone. The finish shows expected and natural lacquer checking and there is a dent in the lower bout, bass side near the binding – possibly a bite from a case latch.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
