Flamenco has very deep roots in Spanish culture and there have been many influential Spanish builders of both and Flamenco and Classical guitars. There are two basic types of Flamenco guitars, Blanca and Negra – light and dark. Flamenco Blanca guitars are typically built using Cypress for the back and sides, a light, brilliant wood while Flamenco Negra instruments often use Palisandro, more commonly known as Rosewood. Regardless of woods, Flamenco instruments are built to be loud, bright and responsive and construction is very light. Action heights are normally far lower than on Classical models, and the resulting buzz or rattle is part of the sound.
Eduardo Ferrer was born in Granada in 1905 and took over his uncle Benito Ferrer’s guitar shop in 1925. He built both Flamenco and Classical guitars and also taught many other builders. Notably, he spent the several months per year, from 1966 to 1968, at the Yamaha factory in Hamamatsu Japan providing instruction and advice. He died in 1988.
Here we have a Flamenco Blanca guitar built by Eduardo Ferrer in Granada and dated to 1970. As a Blanca guitar it has Cypress sides and a spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, and Indian Rosewood headplate and bridge.
Typical to traditional Flamenco models, this guitar uses rosewood friction peg tuners. These can take a bit of getting used to, and we suggest that players who have difficulties with these tuners investigate ‘Pegheds’, a geared peg built to look just like a traditional wooden peg.
You can visit the Pegheds website here.
This guitar has been used as intended, so it has significant wear to the top – Flamenco instruments are very susceptible to this, and often thin plastic, static-cling golpeador or tap plates are used. A plate has been installed on the top, but after the original wear. There is some finish scratching and belt buckle marks, again from use, on the back. Structurally there is no damage. A hardshell case is included.
