The Eastman MD515 mandolin is a high quality yet reasonably priced rendering on the classic Gibson F-style instruments introduced in the 1920s during Lloyd Loar’s tenure at Gibson.
One of Orville Gibson’s radical innovations was to bring violin family construction principles into the world of guitars and mandolins, leading directly to the arched top instruments we find commonplace today.
Here we’re looking at an Eastman MD515 F-style mandolin. This is one of Eastman’s entry level instruments, but that doesn’t mean that they have skimped on quality, just on decoration. Built with a solid carved Spruce top and solid carved Maple back, with Maple for the sides and neck and Ebony for the head plate and fingerboard, the MD515 is bound only on the top and fingerboard. Inlays are limited to Mother of Pearl dots, and an acrylic Eastman logo at the headstock. The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, and here is in what Eastman calls a Classic tint – a reddish brown, very gradual sunburst, rather as would be seen on a violin.
This instrument is in very good condition with very minor wear. It has not been played a lot, so its voice has not fully developed, but should evolve into a wonderful mandolin.
The original Eastman hard shell case is included.
