Showing strong influences from the classic American Slope Shouldered dreadnought line, the Eastman E10SS/V uses all solid woods and a very nice Antique Varnish finish.
The earliest dreadnought guitars were built by Martin for the Oliver Ditson company during 1916, and used the round or slope shoulder format seen here; When Martin finally put the dreadnought into production in 1931, the upper bouts or shoulders were squared. Gibson started using the slope shoulder format on its Jumbo, in 1934, and just before WW2 they launched the classic J-45. The influences of that guitar are seen here in the Eastman E10SS/V.
The Eastman E10SS/V pairs a hand-carved scalloped brace Adirondack Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back and neck. The fingerboard, head plate and “reverse-belly” bridge are Ebony. The neck contains a new dual-action truss rod, a great idea, and the fretwire is by Jescar. Hardware is nickel plated.
The use of Adirondack Spruce for guitar tops is both old and recent. Until about 1943, it was the standard wood for guitar tops, but it was also highly desirable for aircraft components, which had priority for the duration of the war and Sitka Spruce was adopted. The use of Adirondack as war materiel quickly led to overharvesting and it took half a century for large enough trees to grow. Adirondack Spruce is again coming into use on some models like this one, but is expensive and still in relatively short supply.
The Eastman E10SS/V is a great sounding, great playing guitar that definitely evokes the warm, rich sound of the classic design, and is sold with its original hard shell case.
