The Eastman E10SS evokes the spirit of the classic spruce and mahogany slope shouldered dreadnought guitars popular with countless artists since the late 1930s. This combination of materials and body design delivers a warm, rich tone with plenty of presence and volume. It works very well as an accompaniment to a voice.
Starting with the slope-shouldered dreadnought body, the Eastman E10SS pairs an solid Adirondack Spruce top on a solid Mahogany back and side set. The neck is also Mahogany. The most recent models have changed the classic recipe to Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge, for CITES compliance. The model shown here is a slightly older model with Rosewood for those two components, as used on the classic models.
The scale length is a comfortable 24.75 inches, with a 1.6875 inch nut width. These dimensions are a little shorter and narrower than most Martin-based models.
Eastman uses a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and it’s very well done. This provides a good degree of physical protection but does not damp the wood’s vibration as much as poly finishes do. And over time, it continues to cure and become even less obtrusive.
I’m a big fan of this type of guitar – the combination of materials and body shape produce a tone and playing experience that is very rewarding and comfortable.
