The Dobro Model 27 was for a time one of Dobro’s most popular models.
Here we’re looking at a what’s likely a Dobro Model 27, built during 1934 for Dobro by the Regal company of Chicago, Illinois. The body construction is largely of Birch ply, bound top and back, with likely Poplar for the neck and Walnut for the fingerboard. The neck has no truss rod, and a full ‘V’ profile. A Schatten RG03 pickup has been added and leads to and endpin jack.
The headstock uses a slotted peghead, and the rounded ends are one of the identifying factors for Regal construction. Another identifying factor is that Dobro added three small holes in the top at the end of the fingerboard, and Regal did not.
This Dobro Model 27 is in good working condition, with the kind of wear to the finish expected after 86 years. It has recently been professionally refretted at The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop and is set up for fingerstyle playing.
A non-original, 1960s vintage fibre case is included.
Dobro began with John Dopyera’s split from the National String Instrument Corporation. Dopyera and his brother Rudy had developed a single cone resophonic guitar that they felt was superior to National’s Triolian. To produce it, they formed DoBro in 1929 in Los Angeles, California. One of their design distinctions was the design of the cone; Dobros had a ‘W’ profile to National’s ‘V’.
Like many other companies, Dobro contracted out production of bodies to another company with larger capacity, in this case Regal. Originally, Dobro bought bodies from Regal and manufactured necks. This began to be uneconomical, so Dobro and Regal arrived at an agreement where Regal would build and sell east of the Mississippi and DoBro west of it.
