Brand: Deering Banjos
Instrument Categories: Banjos, SOLD, Tenor
The Deering Sierra 17 Fret Tenor banjo is built for use primarily with Irish music, and the Tenor banjo is quite common in that genre. Delivering a bright, snappy sound with plenty of volume and cutting power, the Sierra 17 Fret Tenor fits right into any ceilidh.
Built at Deering shop in Spring Valley California, this Sierra 17 Fret Tenor dates to August 2010 and is in overall good condition – and its headstock repair seems solid. The break and the repair are responsible for the significantly lower price of this banjo compared to its new cost; Deering advertises it at almost US$3,000.
This model is now available in both Maple and Mahogany, but at the time this example was built, only Mahogany was available. At its core, it uses the proprietary Deering ‘Aught Six’ 20 hole Bell Bronze tone ring on a three-ply Violin grade Maple rim. The flange is zinc, cast in one piece.
Anne Hartman here at The Twelfth Fret has set up this instrument, and it plays well.
The original Deering hard shell case is included.
Here is Deering on the topic of the Sierra 17 Fret Tenor banjo:
“Irish Tenor banjos have the shorter 17 fret neck for a brighter, snappier sound. The Sierra 17-fret tenor has our professional -06- bronze tone ring and you get all the most important features that affect the tone and playability at an economical price.
Made of mahogany with a slim comfortable neck and ebony fingerboard, the Sierra banjo will give you hours of lasting pleasure because it is made right and it’s easy to finger so with little effort you can enjoy playing this professional quality banjo.
With the standard Mahogany, the Sierra has the sweet sound of this tropical wood with slightly less sustain than maple or walnut. With the optional Maple at no extra cost, the Sierra is also available with a brighter and more focused tone quality.”
