The Deering Boston 5-String Banjo was one of Deering’s earlier original designs and aimed to deliver the tonal effects of a quality heavy wood rim and tone ring at a significantly lower price. To do this, Deering uses a rolled steel rim with a mass equivalent to the traditional components. As well, traditional Banjo style planetary tuners have been replaced with standard guitar-type tuners.
The Deering Boston is available in both Mahogany and Maple, and in resonator, open back, tenor, plectrum and 5-string formats, and traditional planetary tuners are an option. Whether the neck and resonator are Maple or Mahogany, the fingerboard is Ebony, and the inlays are Maple and Pearloid.
Here we are looking at a Deering Boston 5-string banjo in Mahogany, dating to February of 2007, based on use of Deering’s serial number decoding instructions.
This banjo is in good condition with only minor wear, and with two fifth string capo tacks installed.
The original Deering hard shell case is included.
