This David Wren Concert guitar, built during 2012 and using a very nice Bearclaw figured Sitka Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood for the back, sides, and headplate.
One of Canada’s premiere luthiers, David Wren started work with Jean Larrivee in the early 1970’s. He’s been working from his own shop for decades, with spells at the Millwheel on Yonge Street and as part owner of The Twelfth Fret. Wren Guitar Works is now a standalone shop in Toronto’s east end.
This is a custom Concert bodied guitar, in non-cutaway form, with 25.4 inch scale length and slightly wide, 1.8 inch or 46mm nut width. The upper bass bout has a simple oval soundport. The top is Bearclaw-figured Sitka Spruce and is paired with Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and also the headplate. The body binding is Ebony. The neck and blocks are Mahogany, with Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The rosette is Spalted Maple. Decoration is simple, with a signature Wren inlay at the 5th fret executed in Mother of Pearl and various metals. Tuners are Gotoh 510 models with Ebony buttons. The top has a fairly large, clear thin plastic tap plate surrounding the soundhole.
Overall this David Wren Concert guitar is in good, clean condition. There are two repaired shrinkage cracks on the back near the bass tailblock – they are visible as white lines in the photo of the guitar back; things like this catch the flash, which emphasizes them. Fretwear is light, and the instrument has been protected and well maintained.
The original Ameritage case is included.
