In the mid 1950’s, interest in the electric guitar rapidly increased and guitars like the Danelectro 3022 DC2 were built to satisfy the demand. Designed to be inexpensive to produce and buy, tens of thousands of these and related guitars were built for sale through department stores like Sears (under the Silvertone brand), some in the $70 price range.
While countless players started with guitars like this, most played for their own satisfaction but some went on to spectacular fame. Jimi Hendrix was photographed with his own first electric, a Danelectro 3022 DC2, likely a 1959 or early 1960 model with the short ‘Amoeba’ pickguard as seen here, strung left handed. Jimmy Page used another DC2 on many hit recordings, often as a slide guitar.
This is an original Danelectro 3022 DC2 dating to 1959, possibly early 1960, in the typical Bronze finish, likely a reference to the ‘Goldtop’ finishes used by Gibson on the original Les Paul models and the ES-295. The body is built on a Poplar or Pine frame with Masonite for the top and back, and textured vinyl edging. The bolt-on, 25 inch scale neck is Poplar with a non-adjustable stiffener rod and Brazilian Rosewood for the fingerboard (and the bridge saddle). At the time, Brazilian was completely ordinary and used by most musical instrument builders. Notably, it has the small size pickguard, which was phased out in the early 1960’s and replaced by a much larger pickguard that held the controls. For electronics, the Danelectro 3022 had two ‘lipstick tube’ single coil pickups. They’re called this because as part of a constant effort to keep costs down, Nathan Daniel made a deal with a nearby cosmetics maker for surplus lipstick tubes that were big enough to contain pickup components. On the two pickup models, these were controlled by a pair of concentric pots, providing volume and tone on one stacked control. Tuners are open gear strip tuners, the nut is Aluminum, and the bridge has a tripod mount with a moveable Rosewood insert for the saddle.
This Danelectro 3022 has been used as intended, and has an amount of honest play wear. The thin finish has naturally worn through where the player’s hands rested. Fret wear is moderate and the guitar, presently strung with a flat wound set, plays well.
A non-original gig bag is included.
