Here’s an outstanding opportunity on a Collings OM1 Doghair Blacktop model from 2012. This remarkable instrument, which boasts a value of over $9,000 Canadian is now available at an excellent price!
The Collings OM1 is based on the classic Orchestra Model introduced in the early 1930’s, providing well balanced tone, volume and projection in a comfortably sized package. It is an excellent guitar for all kinds of fingerstyle and vocal accompaniment.
For this Collings OM1 Doghair Blacktop, a Sitka Spruce top is paired with Honduran Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. The head plate and pickguard are matching faux pearl plastic, providing a good contrast to the black nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The Spruce top is gloss black. For the Doghair effect, the Mahogany sides, back and neck are sealed, sprayed black, then a pale grain filler is added, and when dry worked smooth. This is followed by clear gloss coats. This technique is also known in other woodworking circles as “cerusing” or “liming”.
Over time, this Collings OM1 Doghair Blacktop guitar dried out and suffered several cracks, to the back, bass side and top, all of which are solid and stable. The back, top and one of the side cracks have been repaired and cleated at The Twelfth Fret Repair shop. While solid and stable, the top crack is the most visible. Kept humidified, this guitar should be fine for many years.
This guitar sounds great and plays very well, like pretty much every Collings we see. The OM design itself promises much and delivers, and the Collings version is as good as any production model gets.
