Here is a rare beauty – built in 2008, a custom Collings D42 with AAA Adirondack top, Brazilian Rosewood for the sides, back and head plate, an antiqued Varnish finish and a classic ’42’ Torch style inlay set. The body blocks and neck are Honduran Mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are Ebony.
Some years ago, Collings discontinued a number of models to focus on their own distinctive branding. This 2008 Collings D42 is an example of the guitars from that era and is pretty much the best you can get anywhere as a ‘production’ model. While Collings does not now offer this model with these features or rare materials, they tell us that a hypothetical new replacement would be in the $22,500USD range.
This Collings D42 is a spectacular instrument. The materials are top shelf, the fit and construction are extremely good, and the antique-tint varnish finish is very clean and clear. While it sounds warm, rich and full lots of projection, it has virtually no signs of wear from playing – or anything else past being in its case. It has not yet developed its full voice, but that will come with use.
The original arched top Collings hard shell case is included.
