Comments	Here’s a Collings CJ-35 GSB German Spruce Sunburst acoustic steel-string. This exceptional instrument is based on the classic, but short-lived, Gibson J-35 – originally produced between 1936 and 1942, when it was replaced by the J-45. There aren’t a lot of surprises here – the material and build quality is about as high as you can get. The construction, externally and internally, is very clean and tight, the action out of the box is comfortable and the sound is all there. Played in, these are just wonderful. Collings finishes the neck and body separately and then assembles them – this is what Martin traditionally does, while Gibson assembles first and then finishes. This means that in the distant future when a neck reset is needed (and this is the case for many, many instruments though it normally takes decades) the finish at the neck joint doesn’t have to be broken.
Serial Number	Varies as new, this example is 21434. Built during 2013 at the Collings shop in Austin, Texas, USA.
Neck	Mahogany neck with unbound African Rosewood fingerboard, mother of pearl dot markers. Ivoroid Collings logo inlaid on Ebony peghead overlay. 24 7/8 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width.
Frets	Medium frets, 14 frets to the body.
Body	SJ-style slope shoulder dreadnought style body, with a German Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides. Spruce bracing on top and back. Single layer creme binding on top and back.
Finish	Gloss, vintage sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish.
Hardware/electronics	Waverly tuners with ivoroid buttons, bone nut and saddle, fire-stripe pickguard.
Playability/Action	These play really well with the factory setup, right out of the box. There’s plenty of room to move the action around to the player’s requirements.
