This CFox SJX, is a ‘Small Jumbo with Vintage X Brace’, production model built under the supervision of luthier Charles Fox in Healdsburg, California. It was sold new in February 2003 at The Twelfth Fret and is in overall good condition. This instrument features a Sitka Spruce top, Indian Rosewood sides and back, Mahogany body blocks and neck, and Ebony fingerboard and bridge. An L R Baggs pickup system has been installed, with the volume control on the bass edge of the sound hole.
This CFox SJX is in overall good condition, with light fret wear and a number of wear marks around the top and back, expected on a 19 year old guitar that’s been used as intended. It has been recently serviced by our repair shop. It plays well, and has a quite full voice with plenty of bottom end.
The original hard shell case, quite deep and with excellent head support, is included and contains the original registration card and truss rod adjustment wrench.
CFox Guitars operated from 1997 into 2003, with Charles Fox leading design and production. The company was apparently a joint venture between Fox and corporate backers, perhaps a larger non-US-based music store chain, who wanted to ‘own’ a high-quality prestige brand. In 2001, the backers exited and Charles Fox continued for a bit over another year; dealerships were still in operation in early 2003.
Charles Fox has been building high quality guitars since his first attempt in the mid 1960’s while teaching art and studying Flamenco in Chicago. Like a number of other builders, his entry was sparked by a need for a guitar he couldn’t afford, but could attempt to build. Over time, building became a full time occupation. He also founded and has run the American School of Lutherie since 1993, first in Healdsburg California and now in Portland, Oregon.
