Brand: Martin
Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
Drawing from one of the true classic models, the C F Martin HD28 reflects decades of building experience and instrument evolution. The Martin ‘D’ or Dreadnought line has dominated the acoustic guitar world since the 1930’s and those based on the D-28 have topped the list.
In the Martin universe, the model number identifies the body design and appointment or trim level – what materials are used. For an ’18’ level instrument, the sides and back will likely be Mahogany, with a Spruce top. On a ’28’ level, the sides and back are Rosewood and there is more elaborate body binding, perhaps fingerboard binding as well. The ’35’ level introduces a three-piece back and still more decoration and models like the ’41’, ’42’ and ’45’ extend the use of mother of pearl and other shell decorations.
The ‘H’ at the start of the HD28 model name indicates that it has Herringbone purfling. This is a visual reference to historic vintage instruments, built up to the end of WW2. Prior to WW2, Martin used herringbone purfling extensively. However, their supplier was located in Germany and actively affected by the war, and re-stocking was simply not possible. Herringbone purfling reappeared decades later as interest in vintage reproductions rose.
This C F Martin HD28 was built during 2016 at the Martin shop in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It is in very clean condition, with Sitka Spruce top and braces, Indian Rosewood for the back, sides, and head plate. Mahogany is used for the neck, body blocks, linings, and back braces. The fingerboard is Ebony, as is the bridge. Wear is minimal, this guitar has been lightly played and well looked after.
The original hard shell case is included.
Here is the builder on the Martin HD-28:
