The C. F. Martin D-21 Steel String Guitar is less common than its classic D-18 and D-26 brethren. Drawing on the same Dreadnought body design, the D-21 combines D-18 level decoration with the D-28 wood choice of Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate. In 1967, the word ‘Rosewood’ almost always meant Brazilian Rosewood, and this D-21 uses a very nicely figured set. By 1969, Martin had stopped offering Brazilian as an option.
This C. F. Martin D-21 is fresh from being maintained and set up in our repair shop and it plays very well. The bridge was reglued and it is not yet a candidate for a neck reset; there is enough saddle above the bridge top for a few years of playing yet. The sound is full and rich, with the complex warm tones that Brazilian is known for.
The finish is in decent shape, though it looks to us as if at least the back has been oversprayed; the grain filler on the sides shows more sinking. There are some touch-ups on the back that have been polished smooth. It’s well done, and not recently. On the top, the original pickguard was removed and replaced. This is a good thing, because at the time this guitar was built, Martin glued the pickguard directly to the top, which frequently led to a crack. Now, and in this case, the pickguard is glued to the finish and this avoids the crack.
A non-original hard shell case is included.
