The C F Martin company based the 000-28EC model on the guitar Eric Clapton leaned on for his 1992 ‘Unplugged’ MTV performance. The guitar in the performance was a modified 1966 000-28, with ’45’ style inlays and decorations added. The 000-28EC was launched in 1995.
The C. F. Martin 000-28EC Eric Clapton Signature is a very well balanced guitar, producing wonderful results for fingerstyle and picking. As a ’28’ style guitar, it pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate; the neck and body blocks are Mahogany, and the unbound fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. It has ‘Herringbone’ style binding – which would not have been on a 1966 model!
This 2006 example of the 000-28EC, built in Nazareth, PA, is fresh from a full setup in our shop and plays very nicely. There is a surface crack along the center of the top from the bridge, but it does not penetrate the top. There is some finish wear – this guitar has been played – and there’s a bit of wear to the first fret, with light wear on higher frets. A Fishman pickup set is installed.
This guitar has two serial numbers. The first is the basic Martin serial number, 1237549, which dates it to 2006. The second is 13348, on the label below Clapton’s signature, and identifies its sequence in this model’s production.
The original hard shell case is included.
