Here we have a new Bruce Haines classical guitar, using an AAA grade Engelmann Spruce top and a lovely Ziricote set for the back and sides.
Bruce Haines has been playing guitar for decades, and studying guitar construction and actively building for the last several years. He operates a one-person shop just east of Toronto.
This lovely Bruce Haines classical guitar is built in the traditional Spanish style. The sides and neck integrated via the ‘slipper heel’. With this method, the sides slot into the the heel for unified construction and greater transmission of vibration. The top is AAA grade Engelmann Spruce. The neck and solid, non-kerfed linings are Honduran Mahogany. The body bindings are Ebony with Alaskan Cedar purflings.
The sides, back, bridge and front head plate on this Bruce Haines Classical guitar are Ziricote. However, the sides have an interior lining of Alaskan Cedar. Adding an interior lining to the sides was an idea developed by Jose Ramirez III in the 1960s. The object is to improve the tone on a concert guitar that’s played hard to fill a room with sound. In that context, it’s possible for ‘wolf tones’ to appear, and the interior lining helps to suppress this effect.
African Ebony is used For the fingerboard, heel cap and backstrap (the plate covering the rear of the head).
The backstrap also has an inlaid H, done in Mother of Pearl and bone is used for the nut, saddle, and tie block edges.
The scale length of this Bruce Haines classical guitar is typical for a concert classical guitar at 650mm or 25.6 inches, and the nut width is 52mm or 2.04 inches.
The finish is French Polish, which imposes the least restriction on the guitar’s vibration while still offering some physical protection.
Bruce Haines describes the finish in this way:
“On the inside of the guitar, the sides, the foot and heel blocks, and the back braces are all French polished. And the inside of the top has a light coat of shellac on it as well. This adds to the stiffness of the sides as well as provides a good moisture barrier, not to mention it’s aesthetically pleasing when you look inside the guitar.”
This Bruce Haines classical guitar is new, and has not fully developed its voice. That will happen over time as the instrument is played. Presently, its voice offers a full, even and rich tone with good representation across the frequency range.
A hard shell case made in Canada by TKL is included.
