Built in the Breedlove Custom Shop in 2009, this DM Custom Left Handed uses the ‘Revival’ model to reproduce pre-war (WW2) acoustic guitar aesthetics and performance.
Basing its design on the classic square-shoulder Dreadnought (the D) with Mahogany back, sides and neck (the M) and pairing that with a Sitka Spruce top, the Breedlove DM Custom Left Handed also features pre-war style scalloped bracing and an aged-toner top. The fingerboard and bridge are both Ebony, and the rosette evokes the simple patterns of classics like the D-18. Tuners are Gotoh SE780 models, and a faux-tortoise pickguard is on the top – and on top of the finish, not under it, as was the practice with the original pre-war models. While the pickguard mount seems a subtle change, it can have a major impact – it prevents a formerly-common shrinkage crack in the top.
Built in Bend, Oregon, the Breedlove Revival series guitars were very well received, and this unusual left handed build shows why. It’s an excellent instrument in every sense. It’s very well made, plays well, and sounds great. I suspect that despite its age, this guitar has not been played much, so its voice has not fully developed – that will happen with use, and it will sound better and better.
The neck angle is high enough to expose a fair amount of saddle, so there is lots of room to adjust the action to any requirement. In terms of condition and wear – it’s very clean with almost no visible wear, on the finish or the frets.
This guitar is strung with Thomastik Bronze strings and was just set up by The Twelfth Fret Repair Shop.
A hard shell case is included.
