❌SOLD❌ Bourgeois Aged Tone Mahogany D Steel String Guitar NOS 2013

The Bourgeois Mahogany D is a master luthier’s take on the venerable D-18 pairing of Adirondack Spruce with Mahogany back, sides and neck, and the Aged Tone Spruce gives it an extra sparkle and depth. Adirondack Spruce has a slightly wider grain structure compared to Sitka, but is still extremely strong and is reputed to have somewhat more ‘headroom’ when played aggressively, as might sometimes occur in a Bluegrass or Country context.

Dana Bourgeois is one of the acknowledged masters of guitar top voicing, and his years of experience and dedicated experimentation are apparent visibly and audibly. He has repaired, designed and built guitars since 1975, and been associated with both Schoenberg and C F Martin Guitars, as well as his own companies including Bourgeois and Pantheon.

Here, we have a Bourgeois Aged Tone (AT) Mahogany D, built during 2013 at the Lewiston, Maine shop pairing an Adirondack Spruce top with tropical Mahogany for the back, sides and neck, with Ebony for the bridge and unbound fingerboard. The head plate is Indian Rosewood and carries a Bourgeois logo in Mother of Pearl, and the tail wedge is Ziricote. Waverly open gear tuning machines are the only metal parts. Fossilized mammoth ivory is used for the nut and saddle. Hot Hide Glue is used in the construction, which contributes to the ‘Vintage’ tone and also makes certain repairs much easier.

This fine guitar is NOS – New Old Stock – and is Shopworn. It has a small pressure mark in the top, about halfway between the lower bass corner of the bridge and the bottom edge. Because of the shop wear, the price has been reduced. It is not large and does not photograph well, but if you zoom in and look closely at the photo of the guitar front, you may see a small light coloured arc of a few degrees, that could easily be mistaken as a bit of wood figure.

Like all other Bourgeois guitars, this guitar is extremely well built, plays very well, and has a great sound. The Aged Tone top treatment simulates years of aging and helps the top to open up and produce that crisp sparkle that this design is so well known for. It is new, so its already wonderful tone can be expected to improve with playing.
