Here is something unusual – an excellent Bert Kwakkel Flamenco Blanca guitar, built during 2007 at the Kwakkel shop in Gaanderen, the Netherlands.
Bert Kwakkel built his first guitar in 1971 and has been building full time since 1979. His instruments are oriented towards the professional Classical or Flamenco guitarist, designed to produce and project enough sound for larger venues.
Here we’re looking at a Bert Kwakkel Flamenco Blanca model, built in the traditional manner with Spruce top, Cypress for the back and sides, Cedro or Spanish Cedar for the neck and body blocks, and Ebony for the fingerboard, bridge, and binding. Sloane tuners, made by Waverly, are installed. A 12-hole tie-block conversion was performed at The Twelfth Fret; this helps keep maximum downbearing on the saddle, improving sustain and clarity.
The finish is French Polish, which provides some protection to the guitar woods while imposing minimal restriction on their ability to vibrate. A thin, clear plastic tap plate protects the top from fingernail dents.
This Bert Kwakkel Flamenco guitar is in good condition with a few small marks, which are hard to avoid with French Polish finishes. It plays well and true to its design, it is has a well developed, rather loud voice with good projection.
The original Hiscox lightweight flight case is included.
