The Beard Road-O-Phonic lap steel first appeared around 2006 and is designed and built in Hagerstown, Maryland at Paul Beard’s shop.
The Road-O-Phonic has evolved over several versions and the second version seen here features a Maple body and neck with Flame Maple veneer for the top and back; the fingerboard is Ebony with a 23 inch scale length. The current version 3 uses a 25 inch scale length. The resonator is a spider type with 9.5 inch cone. Electronics are very straight ahead on this version – there’s a Lollar P-90 pickup wired straight to the output jack, and a bridge ground leading to the tailpiece. This is a prime candidate for a volume pedal!
This Version 2 Beard Road-O-Phonic is in good clean condition with some wear on the resonator cover and palm rest, the locations where the player contacts it. Naturally there is no fret wear!
Underneath the resonator is a label dating this instrument to 4/24/14, April 24 2014, with a serial number of 167.
Sold with its original hard shell case, custom built for this model.
