An entirely new model in a unique yet functional shape, the Backline Ronan is a straight ahead rock guitar with just what’s needed.
Tim Ronan builds guitars a bit north west of Toronto, and has been developing unique models that put function and durability first. The eponymous Backline Ronan is the result of a number of experiments with angular bodies, looking for a mixture of appearance, comfort, balance and light weight.
The Backline Ronan uses a Roasted Ash for the distinctive angular, faceted body, and Roasted Maple for the neck, which is glued in and shaped with the body for easy access to the upper registers. The fingerboard is Richlite, and the inlays are an acrylic.
Hardware starts with black Sperzel locking tuners and a Graphtech ResoMax wraparound bridge, which improves dramatically on the 1950’s stop bar bridge, and on the Badass bridge from the late Leo Quann in the 1980’s.
Electronics are straightforward. A single MJS ‘Black Earth’ pickup is connected to a volume control – and a conveniently located, and recessed, kill switch. The output jack is angled on the rear facet surface.
We see a lot of guitars and a lot of attempts at new designs, not all of which work out that well. The Backline Ronan looks like it has successfully blended a distinctive shape and function in a comfortable and practical instrument.
