Built in Los Angeles during 1982, this refinished B.C. Rich Eagle features Mahogany, Maple and Koa neck-through construction. The center neck-through section is Koa, with Maple strips separating it from the Mahogany wings. The 24-fret fingerboard is Indian Rosewood, with diamond inlays and the upper register access is nearly unrestricted. Production of these instruments involved a lot of hand work – there were no CNC machines!
The B.C. Rich Eagle was introduced in 1975 and discontinued in 1982, as more radical designs appeared. We saw quite a few Eagles at The Twelfth Fret in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. It was popular with many guitarists in the Toronto area.
This example has a serial number of 85586. The builder’s intention with the 5-digit serial number scheme was that the two first digits represented the year, and the last three the production number. However, by 1979 production was far more than 1000 guitars, and by 1982 the first two digits were 85. This guitar was built in 1982, likely during January.
This B.C. Rich Eagle is not in original condition. The Grover Imperial tuners and wraparound bridge are likely original. It was refinished some years ago, and the original pickups, likely DiMarzio Super Distortion models, were removed and replaced with EMG Select passive pickups. The wiring is simple compared to other B.C. Rich models and follows a Gibson-style pattern with a pickup selector and individual volume and tone controls.
This guitar plays well, and is an interesting and somewhat rare piece of history.
