The Anderson Icon Classic starts with the S style guitar concept and moves forward, building in modern professional features like the patented Buzz Feiten Tuning System.
Here we’re looking at an Anderson Icon Classic built at the Anderson plant in Newbury Park, California during 2017, dressed in a lovely satin sunburst on an Alder body. The ’60’s Vibe profile neck is Maple with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard and larger fretwire, and has a keyed, two-bolt neck joint for better access and stability.
For electronics, the layout is traditional but there are a number of improvements. Here as a fairly expensive upcharge, Anderson’s hum-cancelling ‘dummy coil’ provides silent operation in all switch positions. As well, VA7 series pickups were chosen with an RW/RP model in the center position and a VA boost was also chosen as one of the factory options.
A description of the VA Boost on the Anderson Icon Classic:
“The Anderson VA Booster is a no-battery powered color change for the pickups to which it is applied, approx. 4db on single coil-style pickups and split humbuckers. The boost’s effect is less apparent on full-power humbucker pickups but lends a nice saturation and smoothness.
It is as if, with the flick of an unobtrusive mini-toggle switch (see photo), we rewind your pickups for a little more saturation and oomph while still retaining the same overall character, very nice.
Clicking the booster transitions the pickups to the next level, as though we put the “next hotter” set of pickups into your guitar
VA Boost is subtle sweetness and saturation. It is not like a foot pedal embedded in your guitar. We find foot pedal level boost better applied and adjusted on the floor in front of your amp. The combination of VA Boost and your favorite pedal can be a magic one.”
For other hardware, the Anderson Icon Classic uses a vintage style, two pivot point bridge and locking tuners.
More From The Builder on the VA7 series pickups used in this Anderson Icon Classic:
“VA 7: Our most popular vintage series pickups. The VA7’s slightly reduced pole piece stagger welcomes a fuller bottom end, with less potential for string rattle. VA 7R: Reverse wound VA7 for hum-cancelling configurations.”
The Anderson Icon Classic is equipped with the patented Buzz Feiten system, which is comprised of a set of custom adjustments to the nut, saddle placement, and tuning offsets. No guitar can play ‘perfectly in tune’ and the Feiten system is successful at bringing more notes closer to in tune – effectively reaching the best possible compromise.
This Anderson Icon Classic is in overall good condition with slight wear, and one or two small finish dings, mostly on the rear treble edge at the waist.
The original Anderson hard shell case is included.
Here’s the builder’s description of the Anderson Icon Classic:
“Nowhere near a copycat of any kind, Icon lifts you on wings of unprecedented playability, tonality and resonance that are really astounding. Giant vintage tones resound beyond normal expectations and unlimited string bends abound—push ‘em as far as you can push—still ringing out.So truly satisfying to play!Yes, Icon is in production and it is magnificent. It is the no compromise vintage guitar. But Icon does it in a totally iconic way, and with no vintage compromises. Icon has the look but not the limited playability, so all the Anderson attributes are soundly intact with the vintage visual attractions of:
• Full-sized S-style body silhouette
• Top Jack
• Three numbered knobs
• One rear strap buttonSo you could say: The Anderson Icon Classic looks just right and plays just right. And almost every Anderson option is available, as long as it does not alter the time-honored look. Another interesting aspect of Icon is that many are ordered with Satin Finishes. We have the smoothest Satin finishes in all the colors. But if your preference is a shimmering shine we have all those wonderful Gloss colors as well. What is the one color that you have always imagined yourself holding? And what is the best part of dreams? It is the moment you awaken to find that reality now exceeds them.”
