When I first saw the Kiefte Custom Thinline Archtop Bass Guitar, I thought it looked familiar; it is based on the successful Harrison GB Model thinline archtop electric guitar.
Jason Kiefte is Douglas Harrison’s nephew, and this bass was built in the Harrison shop under Doug’s supervision. The design is a good adaptation of the GB design (originally built for the late jazz guitarist Gary Benson), and brings out its strong points, including a warm, rich tone with plenty of brightness, resonance, clarity and tonal separation. It is also fairly light and well-balanced.
The Kiefte Custom is built with a bookmatched flame maple top on a semi-hollow, almost chambered two-piece mahogany back. The neck is 3-piece mahogany, graphite reinforced, with an ebony fingerboard and mother of pearl dot position markers and stainless steel frets and HipShot tuners. The pickup is a custom Double J model, with series / parallel options available on the tone control. The tailpiece and bridge are custom-made of ebony. A gig bag is included.
This is a very interesting, practical design and I expect we will see more of them in the future.
