The Gibson AJ, or Advanced Jumbo, was introduced in 1936. The ‘Advanced’ means that the X-brace is moved towards the soundhole, resulting in a much fuller sound.
This Gibson AJ New Vintage dates to September 23, 2015 and was built at the Gibson Acoustic shop in beautiful Bozeman, Montana. While it has a similar body shape to the J-45 and a Sitka Spruce top, the sides and back are Indian rosewood, warming the tone further. The New Vintage refers to the sunburst finish, which replicates the original 1930’s finishes.
The scale length is 25.5 inches, a long scale for a Gibson, and the nut width is 1.75 inches. The bound rosewood fingerboard has a 12 inch radius. The headstock inlay consists of a mother of pearl Gibson script logo, and a ‘diamond and arrow’ design that is also used as position markers on the fingerboard. The bridge is a traditional rectangle with an extended bone saddle – and yes the two dots by the bridge pins cover Gibson’s traditional pair of small bolts, which locate the bridge and ensure that it can’t pull up over time. The top sports a vintage style ‘Firestripe’ pickguard and the L.R. Baggs pickup system is factory installed – the controls are tucked under the bass side of the soundhole.
This fine instrument is in excellent, near pristine condition and comes with the original Gibson hardshell case. This model is currently out of production.
I have to admit a fondness for Gibson steel strings, and the Gibson AJ is one of my favourites. These guitars seem to work exceptionally well with a voice or a microphone – they fill a particular sonic range with warm, sparkling tone, but don’t interfere with sounds outside that range.
