These are always a treat – the Gretsch Country Club, G6196T, in Cadillac Green. Similar to the White Falcon but more restrained, the Country Club sports a spruce top and less decoration, but shares the Falcon’s 17 inch body width and 25.5 inch scale length. This example has the T designation, but its bracing is sound post and tone bar, not trestle or ML.
The Country Club appeared with the White Falcon for the 1956 product line, and was aimed towards the ‘progressive Jazz guitarist’, particularly with the solid spruce top in place of the laminate maple used on most other Gretsch models. The Country Club itself originally appeared as the 1951 Electro II Cutaway with deArmond pickups.
This fine example dates to October of 2010 and was built at the Japan Terada plant. It’s in very good condition with very light wear, so light that it may have spent most of its life in its case. The gold hardware has almost no tarnish. The precise specifications on these guitars can change from year to year – this one has a zero fret, which makes for a very consistent first position feel, and a standby switch on the lower treble bout. That switch is a very practical addition. The original hardshell case is included.
