Comments | The OM, or Orchestra Model, body size was introduced by Martin in 1929, at the request of Perry Bechtel, then a noted plectrum banjo player. To help Bechtel move from the banjo to guitar, Martin coupled a full scale guitar neck with a smaller body and narrower neck, and adjusted the geometry to allow 14 frets clear of the body.
The result was successful, providing a very even tonal response and full volume. Though often considered a ‘fingerstyle’ guitar because of the body size, it actually works well being strummed vigorously with a pick, as was the original intention. Many guitar builders have produced versions of the OM body, including Larrivee. The OM-05 model uses mahogany for the neck, back and sides and Canadian Sitka Spruce for the top. This 2009 Larrivee OM-05 sounds great, and is in overally very good condition with just a few small dings. |
