GW Barry is one of the many fine luthiers who went through Jean Larrivee’s shop – like Grit Laskin, David Wren and Linda Manzer – and now builds in Toronto.
This GW Barry M Body cutaway guitar was built in 1997 using Bearclaw spruce for the top, Indian rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Honduran mahogany for the neck with an ebony fingerboard and bridge. The binding is English Sycamore, a form of maple native to Europe. A faux tortoise pickguard protects the top, and the nitrocellulose lacquer finish is in good condition.
Hardware includes a bone nut and saddle, Schaller tuners, and an L R Baggs Lyric pickup system with an endpin jack and soundhole mount controls. It has recently had a neck reset and new saddle.
The M body design is based on a C F Martin design – what would be a 0000 size body; this is what Martin refers to simply as the M style.
The saddle is fairly low with the action height currently at 5/64ths inch treble side and 6/64ths inch bass side. Eventually, as with virtually all steel string guitars, a neck reset will be required, and the price reflects this.
Overall this guitar is in very good condition with minor play wear and a few small finish dings. There is a bit of colour bleed at the soundhole from the pickup controls. The fretwear is very light. As with all G W Barry guitars, the tone is rich and full with all frequency ranges well represented.
