Chet Atkins was closely associated with Gretsch guitars, but from 1981 to 2005, Gibson produced guitars with the Chet Atkins name and his design input.
This model, the Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean, was built from 1990 to 2005 at the Gibson Nashville plant. It features a semi-hollow body design, with the center block Chet had wanted. On the Tennessean, the thinline archtop body is laminated maple with a balsa block, the neck is mahogany with an ebony fingerboard. The position marker are dots, and placed off to the bass side suggesting the Gretsch Neo-Classic ‘thumbnail’ markers. For hardware, there are Kluson-style tuners with plastic keystone buttons, a tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece, and a pair of humbucking pickups. The wiring is reminiscent of Gretsch Chet models – a master volume on the lower cutaway, individual volume controls, a master tone control and a pickup selector on the bass bout. There’s also a plastic arm-rest on the lower bass bout.
This example dates to 1994, Gibson’s Centennial year, and this is partly denoted by the serial number starting with ’94’. It is in good, nearly original condition – the pickguard is probably a replacement, as the originals had ‘Tennessean’ engraved in or screened on them. It plays well, and has minor wear. A non-original hardshell case is included.
