Designed by Tim Shaw, the Gibson Flying V2 was built between 1979 and 1982 using maple and walnut layers for the body and many custom pieces of hardware. The neck is also maple and walnut laminate, with an ebony fingerboard.
Coming towards the end of the Norlin era, the Gibson Flying V2 was an effort to introduce new designs into a slowing market. Despite tight budgets, the Gibson V2 had an all-new and unique V-shaped pickup, designed to provide single coil tones with hum cancelling. These pickups are fairly hot, ranging from 11k to 13k ohms and, like other Gibson pickups of the time, are potted with a dark compound. The brass mounting rings are custom made for this guitar.
As was common at the time, sustain was a value sought by using brass in various locations – the nut, bridge anchors and tailpiece are brass. The bridge is a standard gold-plated tune-o-matic model and Schaller style tuners with tulip buttons are used.
Various finishes were available, and this one is a black sparkle! Black lacquer has multi-coloured flakes in it, making for a very striking look.
Overall, this guitar is in pretty good condition. There is one finish blemish on the treble side of the neck, near the 9th fret. Otherwise, the finish is in good shape with only minor wear. The original peel-off plastic covering is still on the rear control access plate! For playability, it does play clearly. Typical of fretwork of the time, the frets are wide and fairly low, but are not very worn.
The original Gibson V shaped hard shell case is included.
