Once in a while we come across significant instruments like this, almost entirely original, 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Sunburst. Often regarded as one of the Holy Grail treasures of the guitar world, this is an instrument that hardly needs introduction.
This 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard was purchased new in 1960, and has had one owner until recently. Decades ago it suffered a headstock break, which was solidly repaired at the time. We have cleaned up the aesthetics of that repair. The buttons of the original tuners had decayed, and were replaced with a set of Gotoh vintage style drop-in tuners. The screw for the neck strap pin is a replacement, and everything else – except the strings – is original. The pots are the original Centralab units with codes (including 134907) indicating manufacture during the 7th week of 1959. The pickups are the original 1959 construction PAF models. The neck pickup top bobbin is white, and the bridge pickup top bobbin is black. The ABR-1 bridge and tailpiece are original.
The original owner’s string preference ran to 11-52 flatwounds, and we have restrung the guitar with a standard 10-46 roundwound set. Fret and fingerboard wear are as expected for an instrument of this age that’s been used as intended.
This 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst is sold with its original brown and pink hard shell case, which is in overall good condition; all the latches and hinges are intact.
