Brand: Bacon and Day
Instrument Categories: Banjos, SOLD
For a time, Bacon and Day built some of the finest banjos available, and the Ne Plus Ultra was their top of the line. In 1939, extensive hurricane damage to the Bacon Groton shop had Gretsch building banjos under contract, and in 1940 the Bacon company was sold to Gretsch.
This is an early Bacon Ne Plus Ultra Plectrum Banjo by Gretsch, with the elaborately ornate decoration of the Ne Plus Ultra model. At this point, the decoration was largely executed in celluloid, rather than materials like elephant ivory. The spectacular carved lion’s head heel was maintained, and in this case it has different coloured eyes – red and green! The patented Bacon lever-operated mute is functional.
This plectrum banjo is in very nice condition and offers an excellent opportunity to bring home the Bacon. A 1970’s hard shell case is included.
