The Tenor Guitar was originally developed by the C F Martin and Gibson companies as a transition instrument, allowing tenor banjo players to easily switch to more popular guitar tones. The first tenor guitars appeared towards the end of the 1920’s, and they were produced mostly until the late 1950’s. The last production electric tenor guitar was the Gibson ETG-150, based on the ES-150 archtop guitar shape, was built on order until 1972.
Here we have a Martin tenor guitar built during 1937, as an 0-17 model. This uses the ‘Single 0’ body shape, with the narrower, 4 string tenor neck and a 23 inch scale length and is built with mahogany for the body and neck, and ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. It is in good original condition, with some buckle scuff marks on the back. The original fibre (cardboard) case is included.
