The C. F. Martin company is the oldest guitar company in North America, and has been building guitars in the USA since 1833 – and since 1838 in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
The Martin 00-28 appeared in 1898 and was built until 1941, when war restrictions scaled back many commercial activities. However, it has been available on custom order, with one built in 1958, one in 1977, and two in 1984. The biggest change in the design appeared in 1925, when the top was re-braced for the use of steel strings.
Based on the mid-sized 00 body, like other ’28’ level instruments the Martin 00-28 features Brazilian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Spruce for the top, mahogany for the neck and ebony for the fingerboard and bridge.
Herringbone purfling is used througout, as it was on most ’28’ level guitars. Martin stopped using this purfling during WWII for a simple reason. Because the herringbone purfling came from a German supplier, when Martin ran out of their stock they could not get more and shifted to another available design. It’s only been with the desirability of ‘Vintage’ and historically accurate models that herringbone has been re-introduced.
The nut and saddle are bone, and the open gear tuners are original.
This fine instrument is in good playing condition and has a very good sound. It’s not in entirely original condition – it has been refinished, a pickguard was added long ago, and there are some very old repairs to the sides on the lower bouts. The neck has a slight bow but plays cleanly. Original-style bar frets have light wear and have been polished, but it’s impossible to say if they are original.
