MORE →During the 1970s Michael Gurian built many guitars like this Gurian JM, or Jumbo Mahogany guitar, from his factory in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. However a devastating fire in 1979, and the rising tide of synthesizer music forced Gurian to fold in 1981 as far as building guitars was concerned. The Gurian JM or Jumbo Mahogany is a large body guitar, Gurian’s largest, but is more akin to an OM or Classical guitar than a traditional Jumbo steel string like the Gibson J-200. As the name suggests, the JM uses Mahogany for the back, sides and neck, with Sitka Spruce for the top.

As these replicate the original, relatively thin nitrocellulose lacquer finishes, there is an amount of natural, expected finish sinking into the pores of the Mahogany back and neck, and light belt buckle or jean-rivet marking in an expected area on the back.

MORE →The Gibson SJN appeared in 1956 as a natural top version of the successful Southern Jumbo, and had the model name ‘Country Western’. In 1962, square shoulders arrived, and the name was lengthened to ‘SJN Country Western’. The model was discontinued in 1978. This example dates to 1964, with the square shoulders and three-point pickguard. The top is Spruce, with mahogany for the back, sides and fingerboard, with Rosewood for the fingerboard and adjustable bridge.

MORE →The Kohno Model 20 was one of several professional grade classical guitars built by the late Masaru Kohno, survived by his nephew Masaki Sakurai, who runs the Kohno / Sakurai shop in Tokyo, Japan. Masaru Kohno was born during 1926 in Mito City, and graduated from Tokyo College of Arts and Crafts in 1948. Having developed a strong interest in guitar construction, in 1960 he travelled to Spain and apprenticed at the workshop of Arcángel Fernández for six months.
