Bourgeois guitars also tend to have relatively high neck angles, so there is more saddles exposed. In the short term, this means a bit more volume from the steeper angle of the string back to the pin. In the long term, it means that the guitar isn’t likely to need a neck reset for quite some time. Most steel string guitars will over time require a reset, and this can be an expensive proposition. Bourgeois seems to be taking a longer view with the higher angle.

The Larrivee LV-03R Steel String Acoustic Guitar is part of the Recording series, and uses the traditional Larrivee L body, drawn from the proportions of the Hauser style classical guitar. This gives it a very reliable, even tonal representation throughout the spectrum and plenty of volume when requested. The cutaway definitely adds to the upper fret accessibility. This example dates to October 29, 2012 and was built at the old Larrivee plant in Victoria, BC. It features a Sitka Spruce top, with Indian Rosewood used for the sides, back, headplate and bridge plate, and the body is bound with maple.

This afternoon we’re looking a lovely Bourgeois Custom OMC, or Orchesta Model Cutaway, using an Adirondack Spruce top with Herringbone purfling, Indian Rosewood for the back, sides and headplate, Mahogany for the neck and Ebony for the fingerboard and Pyramid-style bridge.

❌SOLD❌ Gibson Thunderbird Bicentennial Bass Black,1976

The Gibson Thunderbird Bicentennial, as seen here, is a fairly rare bird. The Thunderbird Bicentennial Bass was built between 1976 and 1979 for a total production run of 1,855 units to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. In black or ‘ebony’, 91 were made in 1976 and a total of 411 over the entire run. Highly distinctive, the Thunderbird Bicentennial is based on the 1963 Thunderbird ‘reverse’ models. However, it carries a newer three-point bridge and the pickguard has an engraved red, white and blue Thunderbird in sejant erect position with ‘1976’ below the bird.

Here we have a Morgan OM Maple with clear gloss natural lacquer finish built during 1997, featuring a Sitka Spruce top and Flamed Maple for the sides and back. Morgan guitars are built in David Iannone’s shop in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Iannone has been building on his own since 1985, following an apprenticeship with Jean Larrivee. Many now-prominent Canadian builders learned and developed their skills in Larrivee’s shops in Toronto, Victoria and Vancouver.
