The first Larrivee classical guitars appeared while Jean Larrivee was studying guitar building with the late Edgar Monch in Toronto. By the time this guitar was built, in 1974, his workshop was on the second floor of the Tarragon Theater. From there, expansion has continued as Larrivee began building exceptional steel string guitars.

Introduced in 1958, the Guild Savoy was available in cutaway acoustic form – as the A-150 here – and as the electric X-150. The body is a full 17 inch wide, with three inch sides. Often, it was equipped with a neck mount deArmond pickup though this example does not appear to have had one.

We’ve received a pair of new Evan Kingma classical guitars, and they are impressive. Here we’re looking at number 4, a model built with German Spruce top and Flamed Maple for the back and sides. It features a 650mm scale lenmgth and 52mm nut width, a 5-fan bracing pattern, Der Jung tuners, and a French Polish finish.

Today we have a very rare treat, something that I have heard on recordings, perhaps seen on stage, but never up close. This is a Bozo Podunavic Bell Western 12-string, built in the USA.

Bozo guitars, built by Bozo Podunavac in California or later Florida, are not at all common, but were used by a number of highly influential guitarists. The notable player for me was Leo Kottke, whose incredible skill with the 12-string still astounds all of us here – regardless of how fast and hard he’s playing, every note is clear, clean and audible.
