This David Nichols OO style guitar demonstrates Nichol’s high degree of familiarity with pearl inlay – it looks like it was easy for the builder to do, a sure sign that it isn’t. This David Nichols OO style guitar is a great example. Dave Nichols has spent decades doing custom inlay work, including a lot for the Martin Guitar company, and he’s chosen the classic designs and here, the ‘Style 41’ inlay set executed in Mother of Pearl and Abalone.

The Martin OM-42 is a fantastic guitar, based on the classic and very successful OM or Orchestra Model introduced in the very early 1930’s as banjo players migrated to guitar. The Martin OMCPA1 LH is a left-handed version of a cutaway, OM body design in the now-discontinued Performing Artist line. The designation breaks down as Orchestra Model, Cutaway Performing Artist 1 (the 1 refers to the wood and trim selection), and Left Handed. The OM or Orchestra Model body design dates to the closing days of 1929 when the great banjoist migration was taking shape as many players shifted to guitar.

McInturff Taurus Trans Purple, 2001 NO LONGER AVAILABLE‼

It’s rare to see one of these available for sale – a Terry McInturff Taurus in Translucent Purple finish, built during 2001 with an AA Quilted Maple top. The McInturff Taurus is a single-cutaway solidbody electric using the proven formula of a Maple cap on a Mahogany body, with Mahogany for the neck and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard. On the Taurus, the Maple cap is highly figured, AA Quilted Maple. A mixture of Abalone and Mother of Pearl is used for the inlay set.

Here is a spectacular rarity – the Martin D-42 Purple Martin, #38 of 50 built during 2018 and featuring a fantastic inlay set. Based on the classic Dreadnought design and pairing a bearclaw-figured Englemann Spruce top with Katalox for the sides and back, this is an example of Martin’s work at its finest. Katalox, sometimes known as ‘Mexican Royal Ebony’ and formally named ‘Swartzia cubensis’, is a hardwood sourced from southern Mexico to northern South America.
