MORE →The very first C. F. Martin 000-18 steel string guitar appeared in 1904 with a Maple body, and was built using Mahogany for the body in small numbers until 1926, when 224 were sold. Annual production stayed in the mid-hundreds until 1972, when 650 were built.The C. F. Martin 000-18 string guitar is closely related to the OM or Orchestra Model. They key difference is scale length; the 000 has a 24.9 inch scale length, and the OM a 25.4 inch scale.

MORE →This C. F. Martin 000-18 custom shop model dates to 2015 and uses higher grade figured woods and subtle decoration to improve on a classic design. The first samples of the 000 body date to 1902, and one 000-18 was built, using Maple for the back and sides, during 1906. In 1911, three were made, and by 1923 sales numbers started to increase into the hundreds. In 1933, 14-fret necks started to appear and soon became standard.

As an ’18’ level model, Mahogany is used for the back, sides and neck, with Sitka Spruce for the top and Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The 000-18 is well known for its even, well represented tone, excellent for both strumming and fingerstyle.

The well-worn example seen here dates to 1956 and was built at the C F Martin facility in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It’s built with a spruce top, mahogany for the sides, back, and neck, with rosewood for the fingerboard, bridge and headplate.
