Here’s something very special – a Watkins Dominator Mark 1 V Front Amplifier Reissue in Retro Blue. Hand built in the UK by John Beer, of Amp-Fix in Devon, UK with the full approval (and signature!) of Charlie Watkins, the original builder, this is number 35 of 100 built. The amp design closely follows the original Watkins Mark 1 circuitry, with improvements for current safety standards; the redesign was done by Chris Uff of English Valve Amps.
The Watkins Dominator Mark 1 was bleeding edge for 1956, and its blistering 18 watts and two ten inch speakers struck fear in to the hearts of many promoters. The concept of the V-front is to widen the sonic field, rather than focus it straight ahead. Though it was rapidly pushed off stage by other much higher powered amplifiers, the Dominator was used extensively in studios during the 1960’s and was apparently the basis for the 18-watt Marshall combo design.
This Watkins Dominator Mark 1 Reissue amplifier is a highly detailed reproduction with its Art Deco styled birch ply cabinet and original colour schemes. Parts that were unavailable, down to the knobs and Watkins logos, have been re-manufactured to match the originals. The circuit uses two EL84 output tubes (valves), three ECC83 preamp tubes, and an EZ81 rectifier tube, and uses traditional turret board construction methods.
While built in the UK, this amp is configured for North American use at 110/120VAC. An external transformer is not required.
Comes with a cover that matches the Retro Blue covering.
