The Fender Vibrolux Reverb appeared in 1964 as part of Fender’s revamp of its amplifier lineup, with nearly all models getting Reverb and Tremolo circuits if they didn’t already have them. At 40 watts into a pair of 10 inch speakers, the Vibrolux Reverb was placed between the single-speaker Delxue and Princeton models on the lower power range, and the Twin Reverb on the higher side for combo amps.
Like the Twin Reverb, the blackface Vibrolux Reverb amp was a rework of the previous Vibrolux. In this case, it was a significant change; the 1956 Vibrolux had 10 watts and a single 10 inch speaker and tweed covering, and in 1961 30 watts, a single 10 inch speaker and brown tolex covering. In 1964 it jumped to 40 watts, 2×10 inch speakers, and the new Reverb circuit with Blackface visuals.
This was the point in time where amplifier heads and speaker cabinets started to separate, partly because the ever increasing power levels and massive drivers required for rapidly expanding stages in ever larger venues made combos impractical. Still, until you started getting the larger club or arena gigs, there was a place for lower powered combo amps.
Here we have a Fender Vibrolux Reverb dating to 1965, in good working condition. The Reverb circuit transformer has been replaced with a unit dated to 1968. The speakers are ‘Gold Label, Designed for Fender’ models.
The Vibrolux Reverb is a great amp, with a sparkling tone and an earlier breakup level provided by the smaller (than the higher powered amps like the Super Reverb) transformers.
