Alembic was founded in the spring of 1969 Ron and Susan Wickersham, originally for high end sound consultation with bands like the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. This quickly led to a focus on instruments, and Alembic quickly moved into – perhaps created – the high-end bass market.
Aside from distinctive high-quality woodworking, Alembic made heavy use of low-impedance pickups and newly designed active circuitry. The dramatic improvements these brought soon attracted bass players like Stanley Clarke, Phil Lesh, John Entwistle, Greg Lake, John Paul Jones – basically a list of top players.
