Recently, we ordered and received an unusual instrument from National Reso-Phonic Guitars. It’s a Style 1 Tricone, in chromed brass, but with a square neck.
The square neck is usually not a feature of biscuit-style or Tricone instruments, which are usually found in a blues context; it’s normally found coupled with a spider-style resonator and is used for bluegrass and country.
We asked Burke Carroll to drop by and show us what this guitar can do, and here are a few clips of the result. In some sections, Chris Bennett plays along on an old D-18 from store stock.
