Maple OM
(Used)

photo

detail of front

detail of back

detail of neck

  • Serial Number:... 0803-01 circa 2001
  • Description:... This is one of those guitars where I'm sure OM stands for Oh Mamma.... this guitar sounds great! Not only is this guitar super comfortable to play with its compact OM body size and low profile neck profile but it is as light as a feather! Big leaf maple is a dense hard wood which is often described as bright sounding because it has fewer overtones than other medium density woods and has a quicker note decay. However, maple does have a very focused and dominate note fundamental with a treble sparkle that really cuts through a mix making it a preferred tone wood for live performance. Some players find that maple guitars are overly bright and lack bass response but that is certainly not the case with this guitar. There is probably more tight and defined bass response on this guitar than any other maple instrument that I have heard. The treble sparkle and laser beam like note fundamental is still there but the lower midrange and bass provide extra girth to the overall sound making this an exceptional sounding guitar for use in solo or band settings. As always the simple but elegant design aesthetic from G.W. Barry makes this guitar as appealing visual as it is tonally!
  • Neck:... Mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, 1 3/4" bone nut, 25.5" scale length, low profile neck shape.

The Engelmann spruce top has a full spectrum of tonal shades, lots overtones and responds well to players with a light touch. The Black Walnut sides and back has a similar density and stiffness to koa which provides bright trebles and a full midrange somewhere between mahogany and rosewood. The low end has a warm overtone series and should continue to fill out the more the guitar is played. The neck profile is very comfortable to play and light/medium strumming and fingerstyle playing sounds great on this guitar!!

  • Serial Number:... 45697 circa 1931
  • Description:... The Martin Orchestra Model was original released in 1929 and was available until 1933 when it was changed to the shorter scale 000 model. This OM-18 features a long scale neck on a small body which makes a very responsive and playable guitar. One of the first truly modern flat top acoustic guitars it was also the first Martin to have a neck with 14 frets clear of the body. The comfortable V neck profile and 1 3/4" nut width along with the smaller body instantly appealed to finger style players. Major factors contributing to the great sound of these guitars are the scalloped braces, small maple bridge plate which allow the top to move more freely and the long scale length. This longer scale length requires the strings to be at a higher tension when tuned to concert pitch. This extra tension drives the top more and provides more volume and tone. This example is in all original and excellent overall condition with purely cosmetic play wear!!
  • Neck:... Mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, 1 3/4" nut width, 25.4" scale length, V neck profile, Brazilian rosewood head stock overlay.
  • Frets:... Very little wear.
  • Body:... OM body, mahogany sides and back, Sitka spruce top, ebony bridge with bone through saddle.
  • Finish:... Lots of play wear, lacquer checking, scratches, dents and belt buckle wear.
  • Hardware/electronics:... Grover PAT. banjo tuners.
  • Playability/Action:... Great playability with current action at 6.5/64" bass side and 4/64" treble side with 4/64" saddle protruding.
  • Case:... Newer tweed hardshell case.

  • Serial Number:... 020 circa 2007
  • Description:... This Style 1 CW from R.Taylor is like a wedge of triple chocolate cake ... dark, rich, sweet and sinfully delicious. Everything about this guitar is top notch quality from the versatile body shape with solid internal lining to the beautiful wood sets and the Gold Gotoh 510 tuners. You start off with a stunning set of Cocobolo for the sides and back which features light colored sap wood running down the center of the colorful grain lines. Tonally the wood is fast and responsive with lots of note distinction and moderate note decay. It works really well on this body shape which blends low end and midrange with the woods brightness. Add to that a lovely Redwood top which adds warmth and volume to quieter tones. This combination of body shape and woods lends to fingerstyle and light to medium strumming where more subtle nuances come to life. The elegant Green Heart abalone rosette and blood wood binding are the icing on top of this wonderful instrument!!

  • Description:... Here at the 12th Fret, we have a huge selection of vintage and used instruments; far more than we can ever hope to feature on our website. Unfortunately, not all of our customers realize that our website only represents a small percentage of our stock at any given time. Today, we are going to shine a little spotlight on a selection of used instruments that haven't made it on our site yet. We won't be doing the usual in-depth review of each individual guitar; just a quick glimpse to show some more of what we have. We will of course continue our detailed daily features, but every now and then we will do a mass posting like this one. We've received a lot of great second hand Fender guitars over the past few weeks, so that is our focus for today.
