| For starters, let me tell you that the
Sitka spruce that Jean Larrivee selects for his reissued Florentine cutaways
is the absolute highest quality I've ever seen. The even grain,
consistent colouring and incredible display of medullar rays definitely
puts this tonewood into the "Master Grade" category! Add to that the classic
original Larrivee soundhole mosaic rosette, flamed maple body binding,
clear mylar pickguard and a return to the timeless Florentine cutaway ...
and I think that once again Larrivee has a winner!
I'm definitely not the only one who thinks so
too. David Martin had just recorded the audio file for this instrument
when an in-store customer fell in love with it ... and bought it on the
spot! As I have always maintained, the L body, be it
cutaway or non-cut, is THE best all around guitar design on the market
... with a surprisingly great kick out of the bass, a strong but
not nasal midrange and the signature Larrivee effervescence in the high
end! |

Here's
a short excerpt from an article that I wrote for Acoustic Guitar Magazine
on the first Larrivee cutaway guitar: "In 1963 a young Jean-Claude
Larrivee left his hometown of L’Abord, Quebec, and moved to Toronto. A
few years later, he met world-renowned classical luthier Edgar Mönch
at a concert, and within a week, he was studying guitar building with the
maestro himself. By 1970, Larrivée had already started to develop
his steel-string guitar concepts, which were received enthusiastically
by the area’s professional musicians. One of Larrivée’s first steel-string
customers was Bruce Cockburn, for whom he ultimately made three instruments,
including his first cutaway model. I can remember as a young Larrivée
apprentice in the early '70s, hearing Cockburn try to explain a body shape
that would allow him better access to the upper registers of the fingerboard.
Everyone present thought it was a bit of a crazy idea, as none of us had
yet been exposed to a cutaway flattop guitar. When the time came to turn
this idea into an actual guitar, Jean bent the sides on a hot pipe without
the aid of even a rough sketch and fashioned an instrument that was far
ahead of its time." This first cutaway flattop was created by Jean
and was fully evolved right from the start ... and came to be known as
the C-09 Larrivee! |
