Bourgeois Hide Glue Guitar
Word has it that Bourgeois Guitars has won Acoustic Guitar Magazine's Player's Choice Gold Award for "Small Scale Manufacturer" (under 500 guitars per year).  Well ... about 30 seconds playing this particular instrument and you'll know why so many professionals play Bourgeois guitars.  To steal a  Stan Jay adjective ... the sound of this dreadnought is positively "elephantestical"!!!
.
As a guitar builder,  one of the great things about keeping your production low is that you are able to adjust your tolerances and specifications to adjust for the specific wood at hand.  In Dana's words;  " No two pieces of wood are alike. Woods can differ in weight, lateral and longitudinal stiffness, and resonant characteristics. Bourgeois guitars are voiced at three stages of construction. First we thickness tops and backs on the basis of flexibility and weight. After tops and backs are braced, we tune the braces to get as many clear notes as can be found in given top.  Once the top and back are glued to the rim, we fine tune the thickness of the top and back by sanding around the perimeter of the outside of the guitar. If this last step is done properly then the wood and air can vibrate sympathetically, and the guitar gains power"

In this small shop environment,  Dana is still able to personally select every piece of tonewood used on Bourgeois guitars and voice each top at every stage of the build process.  He is also afforded the time to constantly tweak his designs and test new building techniques.  The latest fruit from this relentless research and experimentation is Dana's new hide glue option.

Hide glue has been used for literally thousands of years in the making of musical instruments.  It is not the easiest of adhesives to use,  especially in a mass production situation,  but it has its definite advantages in a small high-end shop environment.  There are more and more builders who are convinced that the brittle stiffness of a hide glue bond will transfer vibrations more efficiently than a more modern PVA adhesive.  Dana Bourgeois has set the bar yet another notch higher!
