S/N: 30, built during May 2003 in Toronto, Canada.
There have been a lot of independent builders and smaller, short lived musical instrument companies. Some are able to maintain a presence for many years, but for a host of reasons, many can not and are mostly lost to the mists of time. Or, in this case, of Toronto. Sadly, here we cannot say that we remember the Alamo, the Planetary Guitar Co. or the person who signed the label, J. McNeil.
The Planetary Guitar Co. Alamo is a well-built, good sounding steel string guitar, somewhat based on a round-shouldered dreadnought design like a Gibson 45. It does have the warm, rich tone characteristic of the J-45 that goes so well with the human voice. It plays well and cleanly.
The Alamo is built with Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, and rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. For hardware, there are gold-coloured Kluson style tuners with creme plastic buttons. The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer and there is a small amount of binding shrinkage around the waist. A hardshell Takamine case is included.
